Success Lessons We Can Learn From The Wolf of Wall Street

While many professionals who have a job in Singapore may not be stockbrokers, they can certainly learn a useful thing or two about gaining success from the Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort. His notorious rise to fame, recently made into a controversial 3-hour feature film by legendary director Martin Scorsese, is one with dramatic ups and downs, but with plenty of lessons in reaching your goals.

Granted Jordan Belfort is a charged criminal for fraud, but his swagger, business savvy and salesmanship is unquestionably inspiring. By looking at what he did right in his career, here are 5 tips for success that we can learn from the ex-stockbroker with the nickname “Wolfie”:

  1. Failure can inspire success

“No matter what happened to you in your past, you are not your past, you are the resources and the capabilities you glean from it. And that is the basis for all change.”

Belfort was a struggling salesman from Long Island before he got his big break at a reputable investment firm. A major stock market crash in 1987 caused the company he worked for to close and lose his high-flying job. The setback only fuelled his desire to bounce back on his feet, and he went back to work at a penny stock house. He then earned enough to open his own minor broker-dealership and subsequently open one of the largest over-the-counter brokerage firms in the States.

  1. Persistence pays

“Don’t hang up until the customer dies or buys” Belfort was a staunch advocate of never giving up, “If you want to be rich, never give up. If you have persistence, you will come out ahead of most people. More importantly, you will learn.”

  1. Keep your team happy

“The girls were the top of the crop, gorgeous former cheerleaders for professional football teams.”

Belfort was known to throw outlandish parties in his office, keeping his entire office entertained and motivated to work for him. With his unorthodox methods, he built a team of loyal followers who were sold on their own products, ultimately making them – and him – very rich.

  1. Think success

“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.”

Being single-minded about success and getting the job done is necessary to reaching goals, of course, in Belfort’s case he chose the illegal route which landed him in jail. However, it is well known that a positive attitude is a tried and tested route to success. Even Judy Zerafa, author of “7 Keys to Career Success”, ranks having a positive attitude as the very first key.

  1. Dress and act the part

“Act as if! Act as if you’re a wealthy man, rich already, and then you’ll surely become rich. Act as if you have unmatched confidence and then people will surely have confidence in you. Act as if you have unmatched experience and then people will follow your advice. And act as if you are already a tremendous success, and as sure as I stand here today – you will become successful.”

As much as we don’t like to admit it, appearances reflect a person’s reputation and work ethic. People don’t like buying from someone who is sloppy. Selling yourself and your products are all about presentation, especially dressing right for job interviews as attire can make a difference in your chances of landing that prestigious job.
