It’s perfectly normal to feel some nervousness as you go about your job hunting. The key is not to let doubts and fears undermine your confidence. You have to adopt the attitude that you’re out to make a significant contribution to a company.
So how do you go about boosting your confidence? Here are a few helpful tips.
Keep a positive disposition. You may find this simplistic, but the best way to go about this is to do things with a smile. Try this exercise. Say something with a frown. Note that your energy level goes down, your shoulders slump, and you feel no enthusiasm. Now, try saying the same thing with a smile, and you’ll feel the difference in your energy level. You’ll find yourself lighter, happier, and full of positive energy.

If a friend invites you to watch a movie and the schedule conflicts with a prior commitment, give a firm and final “no.” Don’t give an iffy response like “I have something else lined up for that day, but I’ll see if I can get out of it.” If someone tries to get ahead of you at the supermarket line, tell him he has to line up. Don’t allow people to walk all over you. When you learn to give definite answers to questions and speak out when you have to, you develop more confidence in yourself.
Look back at your “should-have” and “could-have” moments. Were there times when you didn’t speak your mind when you should have? Did you ever say something with good intentions but with poorly chosen words? Did you ever pass up an opportunity to gain some valuable experience? It’s true that there’s no point in dwelling on what might have been or could have been. But it’s one thing to live in the past, and it’s another thing to learn from it. Replay these scenes in your mind, and change the script. Tell yourself that the next time these things happen, you’ll know exactly how to deal with the situation. Failure is a great teacher, and the lessons it teaches us can be a great confidence booster.
Look back at your wins. Just as failure can teach us valuable lessons, so can triumphs. Make a list of the high points in your life, and make notes of the circumstances behind these winning moments. What was your attitude leading up to each of these? How much effort was involved? Use your past wins as an inspiration to guide you in your future ventures. And don’t limit your winning moments to awards and remarkable feats. Include things as simple as the time you told a joke that made a whole group laugh, the time you beat a varsity chess player, the time you first talked in front of an audience, just about anything that made you feel good. Bring back that feeling of empowerment that comes with winning, and let it give you that confident feeling that you can do great things.
