The Institute of Mental Health (IMH) is a 1,980-bed acute tertiary psychiatric hospital located on a sprawling 25-hectare campus called Buangkok Green Medical Park, in Buangkok View.

It is the first mental health institution in Asia to receive Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation in 2005. The JCI award represents a worldwide consensus on quality patient care and reflects the state-of-the-art healthcare practices.

IMH/WH offers a multi-faceted and comprehensive range of psychiatric, rehabilitative and counselling services designed to meet the needs of three groups of people, namely, (i) children & adolescents, (ii) adults and (iii) the elderly.
There are seven clinical departments, namely:
• General Psychiatry
• Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
• Community Psychiatry
• Geriatric Psychiatry
• Forensic Psychiatry
• Early Psychosis Intervention
• Addiction Medicine
In addition, IMH has two specialised clinics to treat more specific disorders:
• Anxiety and Mood Clinic
• Sleep Disorder Clinic
• Sexual Disorder Clinic

We talk to Poh Yin, who is an Advanced Practice Nurse at IMH.

Poh Yin, what inspired you to work as a nurse at IMH?

Nursing provides me with a platform to teach, contribute a part of who I am and make a difference to patients. While completing my rotation at the hospital, I discovered that psychiatric nursing really suited me. I felt comfortable talking to patients and saw how my work aids in the recovery and discharge of these patients.

Hence, specialising in psychiatric nursing, choosing to work in IMH seemed to be only natural.

How is an APN different from a staff nurse?

An Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is independent in clinical decision-making. An APN is at the highest level of the clinical track for nursing and is viewed and respected as an authority in nursing. She evaluates, assesses and conducts therapy to individuals, families and the community.

A staff nurse, on the other hand, is an entry level position. The nurse provides quality-nursing care to meet the needs of patients. She can choose to specialise in clinical, education or management track during her career. She can also choose to progress on to an APN.

What does it take to become an APN?
To become an APN, one is required to take up the Master of Nursing available at NUS. This is an 18-month programme that provides academic and clinical foundation for Advanced Practice Nursing, preparing registered nurses to assume a clinical role and use research to improve patient outcomes.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Currently, I’m with IMH’s community mental health for students’ service. I provide preventive strategies to assist students to cope during the critical transition period of adolescence. I like to see results and change – the best part being able to see positive changes in students and families, who are now equipped with the tools to help themselves during crisis.

What are some of the challenges that you face in your work?

One challenge is that school personnel, such as teachers and school counsellors, and mental health providers like myself, use different terms to address problems and do not have the same approaches in identifying and treating children’s needs. I need to address these differences while working with school personnel and parents. It is important that parents and teachers understand the diagnosis and agree with the treatment plan so that they can reinforce therapeutic goals at home and in the classrooms.

What are your goals for the future?

I strive to become the first APN to provide school-based mental health services. This will improve the accessibility and efficiency of student interventions, and allows ease in follow-up cases.
