See Them in a Different Light

For an after dark experience with a difference, discover the Night Safari — the world’s first safari park for nocturnal animals. Enjoy twilight views of over 1,000 animals of 120 species amid 40 hectares of lush secondary forest. Don’t forget to catch Chawang, the majestic crossed-tusked bull elephant and his other nocturnal neighbours such as the giant anteater, greater one-horned rhinoceros and the clouded leopard! The park operates from 7.30pm – 12 midnight, but do come early to explore the retail shops and restaurants, which open from 6pm onwards. An exquisite dining experience awaits at Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant, which offers an extensive array of local favourites and international cuisine in a charmingly ethnic setting that features mementoes of days past.

Novendran s/o Suppiah Seenevasan is a Deputy Head Keeper, elephant section/Zoology

What inspired you to work as a keeper?

Firstly I get the chance to handle such a powerful animal. Not many people get to or want to work with such a big animal. Generally, people don’t always understand the animal/human relationship between the elephants and us.

What’s your job like?

My normal work routine is daily husbandry e.g. feeding and cleaning. We also bathe the elephants daily, which not many people know. The elephants are also taken on daily walks around Night Safari.

What are some highlights working at the Night Safari?

It’s definitely great to be working in one of the best zoos in the world. I’ve also enjoyed the opportunity to travel to other zoos in Germany, Indonesia and Malaysia, and observe how they handle their elephants, and also getting to meet different zookeepers and sharing our knowledge on elephants.

What career goals do you aspire to achieve in your career at the Night Safari?

My main goal is to breed all our female elephants. By achieving this we can send all of the offspring to different zoos to start good breeding programmes. As for myself, I would work hard to be promoted to a higher position.

Nooraini bte Hamdi is an Assistant Manager at Bongo Burgers

What inspired you to work as an assistant manager in F&B?

I like to be in the F&B service line. When I was young, I was influenced by my dad who also worked in this line. His customer service oriented performance motivated me. Therefore I wish to set up my own restaurant in the near future with all the knowledge and experience I have gained while working in Bongo Burgers in Night Safari.

What’s your job like?

My job scope is to manage the restaurant, to ensure that shifts are being run smoothly, to ensure highest food quality and hygiene of the restaurant and of course to motivate my staff. On top of that, I'm doing the usual paperwork such as planning work schedules as well as taking inventory.

I also help to equip my supervisor, team leader and staff with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable them to implement policies, procedures, programmes and maintain safety at the workplace.

What are some highlights working at the Night Safari?

Besides working at Bongo Burgers at the Night Safari, I’ve had the opportunity to work at the zoo’s other F & B outlets like Ben & Jerry’s, Restaurants in the Wild, Ulu Ulu Restaurant and KFC. I’ve managed to gain different perspectives through learning how each outlet operates and have also enjoyed working with different people in different service environments.

What goals do you aspire to achieve in your career at the Night Safari?

With all the opportunities at hand, I wish to become a successful manager, running the restaurant smoothly and being able to train my other managers, supervisors and staff, so as to create an excellent service oriented environment.
