We chat to Leroy Low, Senior Events Services Executive at Singapore Expo, to find out more about what it’s like to work in the exciting MICE industry.

Leroy, what’s your job like?

I’ve been working at Singapore Expo for 3 years and first started out here as an Event Planner. Prior to this, I was working in an events company and decided to apply to Singapore Expo when I saw their ad in the papers one day.

I’m part of a team of 5 people, and we are all allocated to handle events according to our experience. New staff are usually assigned to manage smaller meetings and conferences, before they move on to bigger events in terms of scale and complexity.

There aren’t any fixed duties in my job, and once our sales manager has confirmed a client’s event, we will take over from there - arranging with internal and external parties, setting up of the event, overseeing the actual running and eventual tear down once the event is over.

It can be very hands-on work at times, and Singapore Expo is a very fast paced and exciting environment to work in, with lots of variety too. So every day is different and never boring.

Is it challenging?

Large scale events have many factors that we have to address, such as the logistics, ensuring that our food outlets are well stocked to cater for the visitors, organising human traffic control for safety, and liaising with internal operations staff and external contractors to make sure that everything is in place for an event to run smoothly. We become more confident to take on the challenges with each new event that we handle.

Do you get a strong sense of job satisfaction?

Most definitely. It’s always great to see the transformation of an empty hall into a lively and bustling event that wows the visitors, be it a trade show, exhibition or even conference. I get a strong sense of achievement when a satisfied customer thanks us for a job well done and that we have been able to successfully meet their expectations.

What’s your tip for those keen to join the MICE industry?

The MICE scene in Singapore has very good prospects and it definitely has lots of great job opportunities for hardworking people to come onboard.

To succeed, they should have excellent written and spoken communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, be meticulous, resourceful, independent and a good team player.

They should have excellent co-ordination abilities, time management and problem solving skills, and be able to work long hours and under pressure.

What are your dreams for the future?

I would like to grow in my career with Singapore Expo and be considered for a managerial position, and to also further promote Singapore Expo as a prime location for exhibitions and conventions.
