| Audrey, what inspired ABC To Your Dream Job!, your first book?
Having been an image consultant for some time now, I often share with people that achieving success in their career and personal life is a lot more than just looking good, and it’s important to be able to also present yourself well and communicate effectively. I call it the ABC of success – Appearance, Behaviour and Communication, which is why I’ve called the book ABC To Your Dream Job!
Through this book, I would like to share my knowledge and experience about dressing, grooming and communication with students, fresh graduates, working professionals and even those who have been recently retrenched. In the process, I hope that it will teach them useful advice on how to succeed at their job interview, and also share with them tips on how they can carry themselves well in any business or social situation.
How can jobseekers prepare themselves to perform well at a job interview? |
|
-
Remember to rehearse in the interview suit that you will be wearing on the day itself. This is vital as it will help you to get adjusted to your body movements and body language while you are wearing the suit – this in turn enables you to be more natural and comfortable when you are communicating at the actual job interview. You can even go a step better and get a new suit for the interview – it can be a useful confidence booster as well.
- Pay attention to details like ironing your shirt properly, which I’ve written about in the book as well. I believe that if you take care of your shirt, it will also bring credit to you.
-
At the job interview, when asked to describe about your previous job achievements, use positive action verbs and power words such as motivated, accomplished and demonstrated, for example. Furthermore, using any form of Singlish is a definite no-no, and you should speak only proper English.
|
In ABC To Your Dream Job!, I also discuss in more detail about the 6R approach that can help you to triumph during the job interview, namely –
1. Research
|
4. Recheck |
| 2. Rehearse |
5. Relax |
| 3. Review |
6. Reflect |

| What advice do you have for jobseekers in the current economic recession? |
Don’t be discouraged and have a positive mindset so that you will be able to turn a crisis into opportunity. And because you will be up against lots of competition for a job in the current climate, it’s therefore important to really stand out from the other job candidates.
Besides having a well-written resume, ensuring that you are well-groomed, confident and carry yourself well will definitely give you the advantage to land your dream job!
